Geographically, Australia is the sixth-largest country in the world (7,686,850 sq km),occupying a continent of its own.
Its neighbours are Indonesia and Papua New Guinea in the North and New Zealand in the Southeast.
Australia had 19,913,144 inhabitants in 2004.
The capital is Canberra, some major cities include Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, Darwin and Cairns.
Most of the population lives in the cities, large parts of the inner country are hardly populated.
Only 1 percent of Australia's inhabitants is indigenous ("aboriginal").
Australia consists of 6 states (New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, Western Australia)
and 2 "territories" (Australian Capital Territory, , Northern Territory).
