Our ship was scheduled to leave Venice at 1PM, so we set our alarm for 7AM since we wanted to get some time in Venice before departing. We had thought about walking from the terminal to St. Marks Square, but used our better judgement and paid 10 euros each to take the water taxi provided by the ship. We would have enjoyed the walk, but with only a few streets actually crossing between the islands, we probably would have spent all morning just trying to find our way there. So with only a few hours, once we got to the square, we spent our time just wandering, spending some time in the square, and then trying to navigate the confusing streets and do some shopping without getting too terribly lost. I had heard some bad things about Venice before going, but I have to say that from what we saw, we would definately like to spend more time there. One definately strange thing that we learned is that St Marks Square floods quite regularly. In the early 1900s it flooded somewhere around 30 days per year, and now it floods up to 300 days per year. Really all that happens is that as the water rises with the tide, it comes up through the grates in the square, leaving upwards of a foot of water in some places. With global warming and the melting of the ice caps, I would recommend if you haven't seen Venice, go soon! Anyway, that was about all we had time for there, and so we headed back to the ship and spent the rest of the day at sea, enjoying the boat, napping, and eating.
